The annual Carbon Footprint Report of Danube Logistics is at its sixth release this year. Prepared in accordance with the Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Protocol, the 2021 Report traditionally sets forth observations and data about the CO2 and CO2 equivalent emissions resulting from activities of Danube Logistics at the premises of Giurgiulesti International Free Port (GIFP).
In 2021, the growth of transshipment activities at the cargo terminal led to a 34% surge of the total estimated GHG emissions equivalent to CO2 emissions generated at the GIFP premises. As at the same time the transshipment volumes increased by 58%, the CO2e emissions per ton of transshipped cargo tumbled by 15%, demonstrating the efficiency increase mainly of the cargo handling equipment. In addition, the successive upgrade of newer lighting technology contributed to slower increase of electrical emissions.
As fossil fuel used for internal combustion engines is the major source of CO2 emissions, the control and optimization of diesel use for port equipment will remain important for both environmental and economic reasons. In consequence, Danube Logistics will intensify its efforts to procure electrical driven loading equipment and machinery in future.
