On August 18, 2010 in Giurgiulesti International Free Port, there was conducted an oil spill response exercise. This exercise is meant to train employees and to improve their skills for the safe unloading of an oil tanker according to all the rules and procedures. It included a training of how to use the boom and the skimmer so that in the extremely unlikely event of an oil spill, the port staff can collect the oil off the surface of the water and not allow the spill further into the river. The deployment of the boom is a standard practice conducted at every mooring and loading of an oil tanker. However in case of an exercise, it comes with greater value and benefits for staff then in real time as there is more time for questions and repeated practice for everyone to improve.
The exercise was conducted under the supervision of the fire department of Cahul region, who stated that there were no mistakes detected in the procedure and were very satisfied with the results of the work done.
